All I can do is shake my head.
What happened?
What happened to Bradford Anderson?
How about Carolyn Hennesy?
Nancy Lee Grahn? Kirsten Storms? Erika Slezak? Robert S. Woods? Laura Wright? Catherine Hickland? Michael E. Knight? The list goes on and on and on….
Most of my favorites – in fact the majority of talented ABC soapsters – have been snubbed by the 2008 Daytime Emmy Nominations.
Blatantly so.
The only ABC actors to receive nominations are: Lead Actor – David Canary (Adam/Stuart Chandler) from All My Children and Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) from General Hospital; Supporting Actor – Brian Kerwin (Charlie Banks) from One Life To Live.
All fabulous actors.
Yes. Definitely.
Are they deserving?
Yes. Definitely.
But, my goodness, how can they overlook two of the brightest spots on my soap screen over the past year – Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) and Carolyn Hennesy (Diane Miller)?
Those two keep me fixated on GH when most of the other stuff is FF material.
Those two give 110 percent and more each and every time they are on the screen.
Then there’s Erika Slezak (Viki) on OLTL. She IS OLTL.
She’s had a wonderful storyline and has given spectacular performances.
She always does.
But particularly this year, paired opposite of aforementioned Kerwin as her new love interest, Charlie.
And how about Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) who was revealed to be Spencer Truman’s killer and the subsequent courtroom scenes where she lapses into mental illness (though we now know she faked it to avoid prosecution.) Hickland did an amazing job with that entire storyline.
I could keep going, but you get the picture.
You can check out the list of 2008 Daytime Emmy Nominations for yourself.
I wish David Canary, Tony Geary and Brian Kerwin the best of luck.
All good choices.
And the hopes of ABC soap fans will be with them.
But there should have been more nominations from ABC.
The Daytime Emmys will be broadcast June 20 at 8 p.m.
The irony?

Michele, I am sooooo glad you wrote about this. If you hadn’t, I would have.
I can’t believe so many ABC actors got the snub. Not to knock those who did get nominated; I recognize many as very talented and deserving actors. But I find it hard to fathom that the CBS actors and material are so much better.
Oh, well. Every year someone gets slighted. Just like the Oscars, I guess. LOL.
Good luck to all the nominees.

I won’t be watching the Emmy show this year. I just do not understand the awards process and believe it must be political or simply a popularity vote. I am an avid GH fan, as well as Y&R. I have not watched as much OLTL and AMC as I have in years past, because simply speaking, I got bored. GH had some really great storylines, especially during the sweeps weeks. The only thing that frustrated me is that they insisted on ruining great storylines by making silly decisions like making Alan and Emily’s ghosts hang around. Despite that fact, GH has had some great acting this year!

Hi, Lola. I’m not sure I’ll be tuning in either. It’s not that I don’t think some of the CBS stars are worthy of nominations, but it just seems very suspicious that it’s so lopsided this year.
It’s interesting to hear from someone who does watch Y&R regularly, as well as GH. I think you are a much better judge of the disparity, that’s for sure. Maybe you should be voting on the nominations instead of these so-called industry insiders! 🙂 Thanks for posting.

I too am more than shocked at the lack of ABC soap nominees for the Daytime Emmy Awards. I have to admit, I only watch ABC soaps these days, so to say I’m a bit biased would probably be true….however, the ABC actors overlooked absolutely floors me. I don’t know the actual “dates” that the nominations are chosen from, so perhaps the fact that the Jesse/Angie characters were overlooked can be attributed to that, but what about the rest of AMC? David Canary is well deserving of his nomination, but can he really be the only one?? And then on OLTL….the characters of Langston & Cole (I’m not a “Star” fan…she talks thru her nose too much for me, sorry)…have been dealt terrible losses during this past year and the acting by those two younger actors has been phenominal! HOW can they be completely overlooked?
I probably won’t watch the show either….and I doubt many of the rest of the ABC soap fans will either. It’s a shame too. Maybe next year, though, ABC will steal the nominations and another network will have to give them some great air-time in return.

Welcome back, MountainMama. I don’t think Jesse/Angie came back until early 2008, so their portrayers wouldn’t be eligible for nominations until next year’s Emmys. Hopefully, by then, someone will have figured out a better system.
ITA with your assessment of OLTL’s Brittany Underwood (Langston) in particular. I really think that young lady is something special; I just wish OLTL would find more to do with her than be a sidekick for Starr.
And, yes, it almost goes without saying that David Canary is more than deserving. I’m still in awe of his talent, even after all these years.
    Thanks again for posting.

There has just GOT to be a better way to determine Emmy nominees. I have NO idea what the current system is, but it is OBVIOUSLY broken and needs fixin’!! OH, and thanks for the “welcome back”. I hover often and post seldom. LOL

Just got around to checking out the nominees over the weekend & agree that ABC got the shaft big time. I have to believe the process is political.
I’m sure some won’t like what I’m about to say but gonna say it anyway … I love Tony Geary as Luke, but he’s offscreen half of the year. ABC or not, are lead actor pickins that slim in soap operas that someone who works year round isn’t nominated?
I enjoy Tony Geary portrayals a lot, but David Canary is working every day & has been superb as Adam Chandler over the past year, from his finding out that the baby wasn’t his up until this ghost storyline & I really hope he wins, he truly deserves it.
I also hope OLTL wins best drama series. I felt they got the shaft the last time they were nominated for best drama. This show has become a must see for me, and they deserve that win.
Where’s Laura Wright on this list as well? I also agree re: Nancy Lee Grahn & Catherine Hickland. There are a LOT of omissions as far as ABC is concerned. Kathy Brier definitely should’ve been nominated as well.
Dylan Cash could’ve been nominated for best younger actor, as could have Kristen Alderson. I’m surprised none of the music from their school play was nominated for best original score, either.
For the past 6-8 months, all 3 ABC soaps have been great imho. Hopefully next year whoever is in charge will see that!
