Ryan or David? Who should Greenlee choose?

One of the biggest front burner story lines on All My Children is the Ryan/Greenlee/David triangle, and there are a few reasons why I like it.

I’ll be the first to say that I don’t like Ryan (Cameron Mathison). I like the actor, but the character just doesn’t do it for me, anymore.

When I first started watching the show, I really liked Ryan, but recently he’s become too much. The only thing they could do to make him more of the Super Hero, I-Need-A-Damsal-In-Distress kind of guy that they are making him into, would be if they dressed him in a cape.

Then there’s David (Vincent Irizarry).

If you caught Monday’s episode, Greenlee mentioned that David has done some rather, ahem, bad things in the past. But now, they are married out of convenience, and David has fallen head over heels in love (which can be a dangerous thing).

They have history too – he was once her brother-in-law, while she was married to Leo (Josh Duhamel)

Now, David and Ryan are fighting to be the man that Greenlee (Rebecca Budig) comes home to every night.

And here is why it’s a good story.

There are two distinct camps. Those who like Ryan and Greenlee (dubbed Rylee by fans) and those who like David and Greenlee (dubbed GreeD by fans).

Both of these groups have a big following, and I can’t help but compare it to 2008 when there was a split between the Rylee fans and the Ailee fans (Aidan and Greenlee). That story was done nicely.

Now, the downside to writing this well: If Greenlee ends up with Ryan, GreeD fans will be upset; and if Greenlee ends up with David, Rylee fans will be upset.

So where do you stand on the debate?

Do you enjoy the breath of fresh air that is GreeD, or do you believe the history between Ryan and Greenlee will pull them back together?

Who is the love of Greenlee’s life?

I made my stand on who I think Greenlee should be with on my All My Children post about new couples, but where do you stand?

  1. I’ve always thought of Leo Dupres as the love of Greenlee’s life. All that have followed are mere imitations of what she had with him. When Greenlee needed rescuing, Ryan was always the Knight in shining armor. When Greenlee needed raw passion, she had Aiden.

Greenlee’s at a point now in her life where career and contentment are wanted. She can achieve that with David. Deep down she knows how David’s mind works, so she’s a bit more forgiving. She shares Leo’s loss with David – that’s a bind that wraps them tightly together. She doesn’t require rescuing or that primal dance. It’s a natural evolution.

I think the David/Greenlee saga has many stories to tell as they reach for that brass ring. Greenlee will have to struggle with David’s own struggle in not resorting to that which he does best. It’s going to be a very interesting dynamic with lots of potential. One thing is certain. If David & Greenlee arrive at that pinnacle where they are fully in sync – Pine Valley is in for a roller coaster ride!

  2. Hi Silas!
Wow! Great analysis! I love it!

I do think that Leo was the love of Greenlee’s life.

And I def agree that David/Greenlee have a lot of potential stories to tell.

    Thanks for posting!

  3. I also agree with Silas…Excellent post. The only thing I’m worried about with Greenlee and David scheming together is that Greenlee is becoming a very “hard” person, very unlovable. We need to see more of the fun side of GreeD and need to see them show some humanity to some of the other characters.

  4. Hi Sally!

I can see what you mean about the possibility of Greenlee becoming unloveable and ITA that we do need to see more of her fun side.

I do really like her pairing with David….

Unlike a lot of soap villains, Vincent Irizarry shows us the human side of David so I tend to forgive David for his misdeeds – which is atypical for me because I usually like the good guys.

Anyway, looking forward to the future of GreeD!

    Thanks for posting!

  5. I don’t see Greenlee becoming “hard” by being with David. If anything, her efforts to help David get in touch with his tender side makes her all the more human. Greenlee causes David to want to be a better person. It’s his own personal demons that are making this journey so interesting. Imagine his mother returning and injecting her mischief into the Hayward marriage. Vanessa’s return could give us some classic AMC moments. And her return can be a plot twist to the reading of Palmer’s will. It’s almost a reverse Mac/Rachel storyline from Another World. David is the flawed waif from the other side of the tracks and Greenlee in her arrogance discovers a side of her that makes her David’s Dame in shining armor. It opens up possibilities for David with Marissa and even Krystal. For Ryan it could be a time for Ryan to recognize that he needs to change his ways as well. Ryan’s rescuer status is getting old. It’s time for him to discover a new side to his personality.

  6. Silas…I didn’t mean that Greenlee was becoming hard because she’s with David. She’s that way of her own accord. I think she and David are great together. I just want them to be less vindictive and hurtful. I think it’s terrible that the writers are having them say Erica is embezzling from the Miranda Center…she would never do that! And I agree that Greenlee has brought out the more humane side of David and the scheming together is fun to watch. I just don’t want it to be so mean-spirited.

  7. Point taken. The whole Miranda Center drama is really superfluous. The writers weren’t very original. They should have made this fight a battle on the merits of each line. That would have been more entertaining.

I still think there is no better time than now to bring Vanessa into the frey. By doing so, it strengthens David & Greenlee and certainly causes David to finally deal with all his Mommy issues. This is core AMC. It’s always been about family dynamics and why kids do the things they do. With Palmer dead, Vanessa is prime to pick up where she left off. I also wouldn’t mind seeing David’s brother Trey get sprung and come back. With Kendall returning to the stage and lacking her brother Josh, this is the perfect time. Plus, adding Trey to the mix will present interesting loyalty issues for David since Kendall and Trey are half-siblings.

Meanwhile at the Chandler Mansion, I see a side of Scott that makes him an Adam clone and wonder if they are going to try and drive a story where Scott deals with the demons of Adam and Stuart. One the right shoulder sits Stuart whispering in Scott’s ear while Adam sits on the left. Quite interesting.

  8. I love Greed, they are a breathe of fresh air. While Ryan has the rep of being the knight in shining armour, its always been David in the past that has actually been Greens knight in tarnished armour. It was David that has been there for Greens through some of her darkest and most painful moments not Ryan: Leo’s death, Ryan faking his death, Greens getting pregnant, and on and on. I hope the writers remember their entire history and use it to build they’re relationship now.

I love that they are showing David trying to be “The man that deserves” her love and watching Greens trying to help him be that man. Watching them scheme together is so much fun and has a definite Mr & Mrs Smith vibe to it, VI/RB just make those scene’s come alive with humor and a tenderness they show only each other.

Rylee is old, boring and played out. I want to see TBTP go with Greed and the potential for new sl’s and direction for both characters.

  9. I really like David and Greenlee together. As for the love of her life, right now I’d say Leo. But she’s fairly young so maybe it will end up being David. There is no doubt that she’s the love of David’s life. I do have a question though. Rylee is supposed to have a lot of fans? Where are they? They have minuscule on-line presence that I have seen.

  10. I’m not a Rylee fan at all…never have been never will be. I just don’t see the allure.

I loved Greenlee with Jake, and as much as I love Jamanda, an Amanda/Jake/Greenlee triangle would be fun.

I like Ryan and Madison together – hopefully that will keep him away from Greenlee. I like her with David, and think they have a lot of potential.
