Imagine my surprise when I tuned into As the World Turns this week and saw a familiar face.
There was Wally Kurth, smiling his dimpled smile at Maura West‘s Carly, when just a couple of weeks ago he was back on the General Hospital canvas as Ned for Emily’s funeral.
I obviously missed the announcement about Wally’s new, recurring role as Sam Hutchins in Oakdale, so forgive me, dear readers, if this is old news to you. But I couldn’t let this latest glimpse of this multi-talented man pass by without some comment.
It’s funny how you can start taking an actor for granted after they’ve played a certain role for awhile. I’ll admit that happened for me with Wally after he’d spent years as Ned.
I enjoyed him as a foil for Jenny and Paul. I loved him with Julia and Lois. I even tolerated Eddie Maine, even though I’m not usually fond of the crossover musician schtick. But Wally was talented enough to pull it all off. Plus, his sardonic ways fit in so well with the Quartermaine clan; he could hurl insults with the best of ’em.
Then he and Alexis got together, and although they were a good match, something about them bored me. Maybe it was because I wanted a Jax/Alexis pairing and Ned (along with super-bland Chloe) stood in the way.
In any case, Ned became a bit dry as a character. The writers seemed to think so, too, because his stories became more and more absurd. (Remember his dalliance with Skye? Um, awkward much?) So when Ned left, I wasn’t heartbroken.
As I was watching him on ATWT, though, it struck me again how charming and twinkly and downright sexy Wally can be.
This change of soap address has obviously served him well, and it has me intrigued to see where it will lead.
I hope for his sake, and for the viewing pleasure of ATWT fans, he sticks around for awhile. (And maybe this time I’ll have learned my lesson and won’t take him for granted!)

What, no comments on Y&R or B&B? I have been a big fan of both for many years. As a local actress I have been in touch with the producers of the Bold and Beuatiful about being on the show. I’ll keep you posted if interested.

  4. Hi Donna,
Welcome! We have focused mainly on the ABC soaps in the beginning, but we have been gradually encompassing more soaps.
We are very interested. Please e-mail me at mdargan@pbdailynews.com and we’ll talk.
